The 2021 ENVRI Community International Winter School from January 11-22 attracted 32 participants from all around the world. Centred on the FAIR principles of data management, the online curriculum was delivered by teachers from LifeWatch ERIC, University of Amsterdam and the ICOS Carbon Portal.

   

AgroEcology in EU

The joint Science Digital@UNGA75 and ERA Agenda 2021-2027 workshop on 9 February 2021 welcomed LifeWatch ERIC's help in defining a vision for research and innovation in Agri-food systems with particular regard to AgroEcology.

   

North Sea more exotic

A VLIZ Alien Species Consortium study has revealed the presence of 79 exotic marine and brackish species in the Belgian part of the North Sea and the Scheldt estuary, which represents an increase of 15% over the past decade.

   

EU-Africa Geoscience

LifeWatch ERIC Chief Technology Officer Juan Miguel González-Aranda presented at the AERAP EU-Africa workshop on 22 January 2021 aimed at creating a shared vision for a shared Europe-Africa Geoscience Infrastructure.

   

Coimbra Herbarium

EXPLORATOR is an innovative crowdsourcing platform that allows registered citizens scientists to update the Herbarium database at the University of Coimbra. The move will speed up the digitisation of the COI catalogue's 800,000 records.

   

Datasets for EurOBIS

An extra 90 datasets at the Flanders Marine Institute have been refined to become part of the European Ocean Biodiversity Information System (EurOBIS), an important building block of the LifeWatch Species Information Backbone.

   

ERIC Forum team 2021

The ERIC Forum leadership team was reconfirmed at the ERIC Forum Annual Meeting on 26 January 2021. Chair John Womersley (EES) and Vice Anton Ussi (EATRIS) were re-elected in a clear endorsement of their leadership in difficult times.

   

Next level in Flanders

The Flemish LifeWatch Consortium kicked off a new project phase on 1 January 2021, secure that additional funding had been approved to provide continuing support to its biodiversity data systems and observation infrastructures.

EcoLogicaMente

EcoLogicaMente is a web platform to explore a broad range of issues in the field of ecology. Primarily addressed to Italian school students and teachers, the materials were compiled by university professors and experts on ecological issues.

     

Aquaculture Europe from 12-15 April 2021 brings together stakeholders from many disciplines to discuss circular economies, life-long health & environmentally sustainable production.

RDA has opted for a virtual event from 20-22 April 2021, which will still focus on the themes of global challenges, global mechanisms for data reuse and sustainable solutions for all.

EuroGOOS is the European component of UNESCO's Global Ocean Observing System. Their International Conference in Operational Oceanography will be virtual from 2-5 May 2021.
