Dear readers,
The coronavirus outbreak is a human tragedy affecting directly millions and through its complications to society and economy - billions of people.

Fortunately, in the last few weeks, we have seen a trend that is promising. The opportunity has been made possible thanks to key facilities and companies that have held up fort during this period and are continuing to do their part every day. Our hearts and gratitude goes to the the medical workers, police, dentists, shop keepers and others who have been at the forefront of the pandemic.

There is another entity that has been operating in the background rather unnoticed and it is an importan one, as it has helped us who have been less affected to keep as much of the quality of life as possible. I am talking of course about the the electricity grid. Without the transport of electricity, hospitals would a have tough time operating, communication services would be offline and no Zoom parties would take place.

We asked our Advisory Board members Mr. Jaanus Tiisvend, CEO of the Estonias largest DSO Elektrilevi and Kalle Kilk, CTO of the Estonian TSO Elering - how have the spring storms and CoVid-19 affected operation of the grid?

Implementation progress of the modules – How we manage with corona
The three challenge and case-based modules are currently being implemented for the first time. Some universities have already finished the first round of implementation, some are currently teaching the modules and some are still in the planning process. In this article, we will provide an overview of the current status and how the lockdown due to the corona virus is affecting our progress.

The journey to “Smart Grid from A to Z: Smagrinet’s Empowering Virtual Classes”
After multiple activities to identify skills’ needs, pedagogical objectives and subjects to tackle, University of Lorraine (ULOR), Technical University of Dresden (TUD), University of Ljubljana (ULJUB), Tallin University of Technology (TalTech), Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) and Technical University of Berlin (TUB) with the technical support of LOBA have joined forces to create outstanding content for the implementation of SMAGRINET’s short blended-learning programmes, entitled “Smart Grid from A to Z: SMAGRINET’s Empowering Virtual Classes”. The program, that will be carried out online through a virtual platform, is targeted to those who wish to deepen or initiate a self-training approach on Smart Grids

Artificial Intelligence in Hybrid Energy Power Systems Planning
Authors:
Jonas Vaičys (KTU)
Kruonis Hydro Pumped Storage (KHPS) is a power plant located in Lithuania with the installed capacity of 900 MW. A floating photovoltaic (FPV) system of total 200 MW capacity is going to be installed on the upper reservoir of KHPS. One of the main objectives is to adjust the KHPS generation/ consumption schedule to solar generation forecast in order to reach the maximum efficiency in terms of profit gained from participation in various electricity markets.

Feature-based anomaly detection in power quality data
Authors:
Olga Zyabkina (TUD)
The future electricity grid requires smart features like flexibility, accessibility, reliability, and high quality of supply power. These features are effectively offered by the smart grid. The transition to sustainable power systems with high penetration of distributed, renewable energy sources like photovoltaic (PV) installations as well as the large-scale integration of new device technologies, like battery electric vehicles (BEV), may result in a reduction of power quality (PQ).

Simplified Model of Flexible Heat Pump Load Profiles
Authors:
Valerija Jordan, Boštjan Blažič (ULJUB)
Since the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement in 2015, almost the entire world community aims for reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and use of renewable energy sources in the response to the threat of the climate changE. In this context, one of the main challenges for policy makers, energy system planners and grid operators is the de-carbonization of the energy sectoR. The flexibility of power consumption of electric heat pumps, which can be regarded as a substitution for fossil-fuelled alternatives becomes increasingly important to the electricity system.
