| | | | | Words from the coordinator | | | Thanks for joining us in this exciting project! We have a multidisciplinary consortium which aims to discover novel enzymes that can be used to process natural resources or agricultural residues, for obtaining a natural polymer. This natural polymer, xylan, has outstanding properties which make it suitable as a natural component in cosmetic, personal care, and nutraceutical products. It will replace less-sustainable product components and therefore will allow greener market options for the consumer. | | | The project started in May 2021 and will last until April 2025. Despite the short time passed, a lot of work has been carried out. In this newsletter you will find a brief summary of the different work packages whose tasks already started: from discovering enzymes to exploitation of results. You are going to be involved in this exciting journey together with us from the beginning, getting updated regularly and having the chance to interact with us. | | | | | Authors: Marta Redrado & Carolina Peñalva AITIIP (coordinator) | | | | | | | | Our first activities and results | | | A search for xylan debranching enzymes | | | | | EnXylaScope has a work package aimed at developing tools to accelerate the discovery of xylan debranching enzyme, preparing biodiversity for enzyme screening activities, as well as searching for novel enzyme candidates. The screening activities will target existing and new samples, either by sequence-based mining approaches of public or in-house data bases (as well as new datasets created within the project) or apply functional screening procedures on samples, strain isolates or cloned metagenomic libraries in searches for novel enzymes able to debranch xylan polymers… | | | | | | | | | | | Efficient enzyme production systems | | | The EnXylaScope project has highlighted 4 different xylan debranching enzyme classes; i) GH115-α-glucuronidase, ii) α-1,2-L-arabinofuranosidase, iii) acetyl xylan esterase and iv) ferulic esterase, as target catalysts for enzymatic processing of Xylan polymers, with the focus is to modify substituents on the polymer. The objective of the EnXylaScope project is to establish production systems for these target enzymes, with yields and productivities that allow upscaling for industrial production... | | | | | | | | | | | Extracting and modifying xylans for personal care, cosmetics and nutraceutical applications | | | | | EnXylaScope also aims to develop environment friendly xylan extraction process from forest and agriculture biomass and thereafter modify the xylan using enzymes to make it suitable to be used as key ingredient in an array of consumer products. The extraction activities target producing xylan with high molecular weight and with less substituents. Xylan modification activities use a tool of enzymes to modify the xylan… | | | | | | | | | | | Making results widely available and creating the path for commercial exploitation | | | | | EnXylaScope will originate results that are extremely relevant to the scientific community, and beyond. In order to make those results widely available partners are creating several dedicated communication channels and producing detailed dissemination materials, such as an e-learning tool that is under development. The project's key exploitable results will also be assessed and a business model will be produced with the industrial partners' commercial exploitation opportunities clearly identified... | | | | | | Authors: Catarina Pereira (LOBA), Pilar Perez (AITIIP) | | | | | | | | | | | | | European Commission's EnXylaScope project launched in May 2021 | | | | | | | | | EnXylaScope joins FNR-16-2020 cluster "Enzymes for greener products" | | | | | | | | | | | | | Be part of EnXylaScope stakeholders' database | | Help us reach a wide community! | | EnXylaScope stakeholders will receive first hand invitations to our results' presentations, demo webinars, business case toolkits, etc. | | | | | | | EnXylaScope stakeholders are: | | • European, National and Local authorities, and policy-makers | | • Industry companies that are of the value chain (enzyme and xylan producers; hardwood and wheat straw producers, wheat corn, rye and barley grain producers; consumer product manufacturers; and other interested industrial organisations, associations, groups, communities and experts) | | • Universities, research centres, other related projects | | • Consumer associations, etc. | | Become a member by subscribing HERE | More information, please contact info@enxylascope.eu | | | | | | | | | | |
